About the Project

Palmilhar Portugal stems from an ambitious and transformative vision: to reveal an entire country on foot, through a continuous route that unites territory, identity and the future. In a country that is small in size but extraordinarily rich, this project offers a unique journey: over 6,000 kilometres linking the Minho to the Algarve, traversing the coast and the interior, and returning to the starting point, forming what is intended to be the World's Longest Circular Walking Route.

More than just a trail, Palmilhar Portugal is an immersive experience. Along the way, travellers are invited to discover the historical, scenic and cultural diversity that defines Portugal. From the Atlantic beaches to the plains of the Alentejo, from the inland mountains to the fertile valleys, passing through villages, towns and cities where the past meets the present. Each stage is a living narrative, where the region reveals itself through its people, traditions and heritage.

This project is based on a philosophy of balance and redistribution. By promoting continuous and decentralised tourist movement, it builds bridges between the coast and the interior, thereby combating imbalances and fostering a more balanced dynamic across the region. The flow of visitors generated not only enhances less-explored regions but also boosts the growth of various economic sectors, from catering to accommodation, from local trade to regional products.

Palmilhar Portugal is also a commitment to the future. Its main objectives include reducing the seasonality of tourism, promoting healthy lifestyles, environmental sustainability and territorial cohesion.
